About 3 weeks ago, I was cleaning out my sock drawer and found the pedometer that I recieved for a walking program that my first school did. Curious, I put it on. Over the next week I discovered that I averaged about 5 or 6 thousand steps per day when I wasn’t subbing and 9 or 10 thousand on days that I did sub. (There were even days that I only did 2 or 3 thousand steps!
) I did some research and found a few interesting details about steps:
- <5000 steps/day = “sedentary”
- 5,000-7,499 steps/day =”low activity”
- 7,500-9,999 = “somewhat active”
- 10,000 steps/day = “active”
- 12,500+ steps/day = “highly active”
- 1 mile = 2000 average steps
- 1 minute of Swimming Laps = 182 steps
- 1 minute of Waterskiing (James) = 182 steps
- 1 minute of Sledding = 212 steps
- 1 minute of Aerobic Dance = 197 steps
(For other details about step equivilence, see pedometer step equivalents) I decided that having “Step Goals” would be a great way to increase my activity level. I started with a goal of 8,000+/day and this week, I am aiming for 10,000+/day. I have put a widget in my sidebar to help me keep track. We’ll see how it goes. Wish me luck!
